Ep. 3 - Screaming into the Void

00:00:10:28 - 00:00:21:09
Speaker 1
Hello. Hello. Hello. Welcome. Welcome to episode three. Do you do this or.

00:00:21:12 - 00:00:24:12
Speaker 2
Naturally I kind of switch between.

00:00:24:13 - 00:00:25:06
Speaker 1
You're not.

00:00:25:06 - 00:00:27:20
Speaker 2
Here. This. This is what I do.

00:00:27:22 - 00:00:29:09
Speaker 1
This is the European thing.

00:00:29:12 - 00:00:31:08
Speaker 2
That is the European three. Yeah.

00:00:31:10 - 00:00:32:02
Speaker 1
I'm this.

00:00:32:04 - 00:00:36:01
Speaker 2
Anyway, I'm Candace.

00:00:36:03 - 00:00:39:23
Speaker 1
I'm Monica. This is As We Art.

00:00:39:25 - 00:00:58:02
Speaker 2
Yeah, this is a podcast. We also have a YouTube channel, which, if you're watching, you know, but we talk about things we've created this week and what's inspiring us. And we want to hear from you what's inspiring you and what have you created this week? So here we go.

00:00:58:04 - 00:01:25:15
Speaker 1
We always want to hear about art. We always want to hear about what's inspiring you. And this week we also want to hear about how you're managing and coping with the crazy, awful stuff that's happening. So we are here to keep the focus on creating and art and making that choice, and to find that joy and that art.

00:01:25:15 - 00:01:35:19
Speaker 1
That is why we're here. But in reality, with stuff going on in the world and our country, we also really do want to know how you're managing and what you're doing as a response.

00:01:35:27 - 00:01:53:07
Speaker 2
Yeah. Art is the way that we deal with it and how we put our intentions and our energy and assistance into the world. So we want to know what you do to do the same thing. And if that's scream into the void, we totally get it.

00:01:53:09 - 00:01:58:26
Speaker 1
Screaming into the void does help. And we do that through art and writing sometimes.

00:01:58:27 - 00:01:59:20
Speaker 2
Yeah.

00:01:59:23 - 00:02:06:21
Speaker 1
So, Candace, who's going to start to speak on what art they did? I think I started.

00:02:06:22 - 00:02:31:02
Speaker 2
I think you started last week. I'm going to start this week. So do what I did was, I didn't accomplish a lot. I feel like this week as far as art goes. I kind of struggled to create. I dealt with a lot more of consuming inspiration as well as doom scrolling. So that's that was my week a little bit.

00:02:31:02 - 00:03:00:24
Speaker 2
But what I created was I just got the, I filled in the black parts that are going to be black on my linocut that I've been working on. It's a visual representation of my brain at the moment. And, yeah. So with a linocut, it's kind of a reverse of what you think of with drawing. You're actually leaving the parts that are colored in and cutting everything else away.

00:03:00:27 - 00:03:10:02
Speaker 2
So you kind of have to think of it in terms of negative space. So I color in the parts that stay so I know not to touch them with the cutters.

00:03:10:05 - 00:03:11:16
Speaker 1
That is hard for my.

00:03:11:16 - 00:03:26:24
Speaker 2
Brain, you know. It's a very weird thing to wrap your brain around sometimes. Especially some people do far more intricate designs than I do. And sometimes I just look at them like, that's nice. I won't do that ever. But that's great.

00:03:26:27 - 00:03:41:11
Speaker 1
Yeah. The little experience I've had with lino cutting, I have to take the black sharpie on to the linoleum and color in the parts that I'm not to cut. Yeah it is. It's a reverse in the brain. It's hard for me.

00:03:41:14 - 00:03:45:16
Speaker 2
A little bit of a mental mindfuck. So, yeah.

00:03:45:18 - 00:03:50:06
Speaker 1
Yeah. And there's no erasing if you cut no wrong.

00:03:50:12 - 00:03:55:20
Speaker 2
So you can, like, try to piece linoleum back together and. Oh, no, I don't know what you'd do.

00:03:55:27 - 00:03:58:04
Speaker 1
Get a new linoleum and start over.

00:03:58:04 - 00:04:02:13
Speaker 2
Start all over. Much like this podcast you get one take.

00:04:02:19 - 00:04:09:03
Speaker 1
So we're doing this with one take. We're not using a script. I think that's obvious to most people. We're not planning.

00:04:09:03 - 00:04:13:09
Speaker 2
I don't think anyone's watching this going, oh, I wonder who wrote their script. Yeah.

00:04:13:11 - 00:04:32:06
Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah, this is real. This is raw. And we're not editing out mistakes. So we are really glad you're here. Whether you're listening or watching or both. Thank you for being here. Yeah. You mentioned that you did that for your artwork, but I also did see your journal very often in different rooms.

00:04:32:06 - 00:05:02:13
Speaker 2
So yeah, I did journal a bit this week. I'm not, typically a journal or, but I just had some stuff I wanted to get down on paper and deal with. You know, I have a very, like, put some punk rock on and handle that shit mentality this week. So, yeah, it was a lot of putting things on paper to deal with my emotions, but also just try to put some good energy out into the universe for the people who are going through it.

00:05:02:15 - 00:05:30:21
Speaker 1
Yeah, yeah, I always say this, I'm going to say it again. I will say it in the future is a privilege to be able to pause and work on art, and I think the benefits are worth it. Not feeling like you're erased. Not feeling like your voice is silenced, but being able to make a mark in some creative way on your own terms, whatever that art is for you, whatever it is you're doing.

00:05:30:23 - 00:05:54:21
Speaker 1
And we'd love to know if you want to share with us. So we have mentioned that, we post pictures of the art we're discussing or the inspiration we're discussing, and we hashtag it with as we art that's on Instagram. So we love the comments that are coming in on the YouTube channel. The direct messaging is awesome.

00:05:54:21 - 00:06:09:07
Speaker 1
The comments on Instagram, it's all good. Keep it coming. Show us pictures of what you're working on or what's inspiring you, or how you're dealing with some seriously. Yeah, awful shit that's happening in the world and our country this week, for sure.

00:06:09:09 - 00:06:31:20
Speaker 2
Yeah. For us, at least for me, I guess art keeps me feeling like I have. I'm doing something to help. And not just having that freeze moment where I. I can't figure out what I need to do to take action. So, yeah, it's, it's been great seeing what you are all working on. And thank you so much for sharing.

00:06:31:22 - 00:06:48:01
Speaker 2
It's really, really awesome to build a community with you and be able to feel like we're all in one gigantic room just talking about what we're working on. So, what do you work on this week? Monica? Bad segue. You're welcome.

00:06:48:04 - 00:07:11:29
Speaker 1
Well, let's see, we've mentioned that we're new to this and we're learning as we go. And this podcast corner has a couple of blank walls. So I thought it would be fun to make a stained glass sign with the name of our podcast. And if you've been following along every week, you know, I'm showing you each step, each, phase of the long process.

00:07:12:00 - 00:07:16:13
Speaker 1
It is stained glass. So this week I.

00:07:16:15 - 00:07:18:09
Speaker 2
I'll be your phone swinger again.

00:07:18:10 - 00:07:20:00
Speaker 1
Okay, here we go.

00:07:20:02 - 00:07:25:21
Speaker 2
This week. Ooh. That's awesome.

00:07:25:23 - 00:07:42:20
Speaker 1
I don't know if that's working. Okay, so this week I took the grinder and made each piece of glass smooth, and, I did the letters in white. I think I had mentioned we were going to do a poll. Yes, we.

00:07:42:23 - 00:07:49:08
Speaker 2
Have a poll on Instagram, black or white letters, but instead we took a poll at home and we decided white.

00:07:49:09 - 00:07:59:15
Speaker 1
So I was halfway through cutting the letters and I was like, oh, I considered black glass for the letters. And I told told the children we'd have a poll and.

00:07:59:20 - 00:08:01:29
Speaker 2
Sometimes we lie. Sorry.

00:08:02:01 - 00:08:22:28
Speaker 1
I just did white letters. I hope you can see this. And if you're again, if you're just listening to the podcast, I'm showing you a stained glass sign that is not soldered yet. So each piece was ground and each piece has been wrapped with copper foil. And the next step will take the soldering iron and make it all permanently attached.

00:08:22:28 - 00:08:29:19
Speaker 1
And then I'll frame it and then we'll polish it and then we'll hang it. So I think by next, by next episode it will be on the wall.

00:08:29:23 - 00:08:30:19
Speaker 2
All right.

00:08:30:21 - 00:08:34:06
Speaker 1
Yeah. So as we art, the sign is coming along.

00:08:34:07 - 00:08:41:09
Speaker 2
It looks great. And I do like the white letters, so I'm glad we took a home poll.

00:08:41:11 - 00:08:47:17
Speaker 1
Yeah. We'll see if it's going on a wall so it can be opaque. I thought it would be good. And we'll have to figure out something for this wall.

00:08:47:19 - 00:08:57:07
Speaker 2
Yeah, maybe I'll do a linocut of as We Art for that wall. Nice. So we can cover the abyss behind me with stained glass and the abyss behind you with a linocut.

00:08:57:15 - 00:09:26:22
Speaker 1
Yeah, that sounds good. I also did a lot of writing. I'm working on my writing. I'm submitting two pieces and I might be three. I started a third piece, which is a poem, as a response to what's going on in the world. And whenever I'm writing, whatever I'm doing art, really anything I often try to send out, I don't know, like waves of positivity and hope and compassion and love for anyone who's missing it, I don't know.

00:09:26:22 - 00:09:40:16
Speaker 1
I just it's sort of hard to explain. It might not be coming across right, but I really put a lot into what I was working on this week with extra, extra thoughts for just people going through it in our country.

00:09:40:19 - 00:09:57:03
Speaker 2
I think that's great. I think honestly, putting vibes out for people is always effective, even if it just makes things easier in your world for a moment. But I really think those vibes get out there to people, so I hope, I think it's great.

00:09:57:06 - 00:10:16:12
Speaker 1
It's also sort of strange to be on this episode or be doing art. I don't want it to come across as tone deaf of what's happening in the world, but we have we have obligations still to fulfill. Like, we gotta go to work. Can we get it, feed our family? And we had to try and get your haircut.

00:10:16:12 - 00:10:32:01
Speaker 1
Like there's some like normalcy to our day to day. Again, that's a privilege to have that luxury of mundane tasks. To do that. We don't take that for granted. But when we went for a drive, we did go for a little bit of a distance to get your haircut.

00:10:32:01 - 00:10:48:08
Speaker 2
Yeah. We live in a, our queer friendly barber shop Dead Zone. So we have to drive a little bit to find someone who's not like, what's this lesbian doing it by barbershop? Yeah. So, yeah, we go to a really awesome place, but.

00:10:48:10 - 00:10:50:20
Speaker 1
Give them a shout out, we turn all the way to Providence.

00:10:50:24 - 00:10:55:19
Speaker 2
Chop Shop. Go get your haircut with Andre's. He's awesome. Yeah.

00:10:55:23 - 00:10:58:16
Speaker 1
Come on. Very funny. He's. He's funny.

00:10:58:16 - 00:10:58:27
Speaker 2
Yes.

00:10:58:27 - 00:11:01:05
Speaker 1
Energetic. Funny. And he knows how to cut your hair.

00:11:01:09 - 00:11:11:24
Speaker 2
He's awesome. Yeah, but it's worth the drive 100%, because I mean, you know, I didn't have to wear a hat this week, so I'm moving up in status.

00:11:11:28 - 00:11:16:26
Speaker 1
There you go. It's nice to have that when you feel like someone understands you.

00:11:16:26 - 00:11:21:29
Speaker 2
For sure. It's very comforting and affirming. And I love it.

00:11:21:29 - 00:12:02:02
Speaker 1
So because you've been into barbershops before and they're like, we don't cut women's hair. It's like, have you seen this haircut? But well we did that. We got to appreciate the drive and nature and we stopped. It was freezing cold, but we stopped and filmed some seagulls on this rock jetty over the ocean. And it was just like we had to take that moment and pause and be like, we're so lucky we can step away from all of the chaos in the news and appreciate a moment in nature which always astounds me that nature just continues and goes on despite all the things happening in the human world.

00:12:02:03 - 00:12:04:11
Speaker 1
That nature just continues.

00:12:04:14 - 00:12:13:24
Speaker 2
Yep. And we did only take a moment outside because it was freezing. Really cold. So cold in New England right now. So yeah.

00:12:13:29 - 00:12:32:08
Speaker 1
I do like to mention where we are because wherever you're listening in the world, we'd love to know if you can put your country or your city if you're comfortable doing that in the comments. It's always fun to know where people, are tuning in. We are. We're in New England, the northeastern part of the United States of America, and it just happened again.

00:12:32:08 - 00:12:49:18
Speaker 1
So if you see an orange light going by on the wall, it's because of snow plow trucks that are going by. We're in the middle of a pretty major snowstorm. Yeah, we're hoping this gets filmed and posted before we lose. If we lose power, if.

00:12:49:18 - 00:12:53:25
Speaker 2
You don't see us for a while, we had to wait for power to come back on. So. Yeah.

00:12:53:27 - 00:12:59:10
Speaker 1
Yeah. So if you're dealing with any sort of weather, we hope you're staying safe and warm for sure.

00:12:59:10 - 00:13:06:18
Speaker 2
This storm's a big one. I think I read it stretches over like 2000 miles of the United States. Oh my God, yeah.

00:13:06:20 - 00:13:08:10
Speaker 1
That's like the Hulk. Well, I don't know how many.

00:13:08:11 - 00:13:11:05
Speaker 2
It's like New Mexico to Maine, I think. Oh, that's all I saw.

00:13:11:08 - 00:13:14:14
Speaker 1
So I hope everybody's staying safe. More like 3000.

00:13:14:15 - 00:13:17:16
Speaker 2
I think it's close to 3000. Yeah.

00:13:17:18 - 00:13:27:17
Speaker 1
Typical American. Don't know my own geography, I don't know. Anyway, so, so you mentioned music, but what specifically inspired you this week?

00:13:27:19 - 00:13:52:01
Speaker 2
I was listening to a lot of, like, punk that I used to listen to. Definitely Dead Kennedys, Chumbawamba. I know everybody knocks Chumbawamba because everyone only knows Tubb. Something from the late 90s, but they were such a good anarcho punk band, and they had so many albums before that album, and that album's bangin, so, but they were way ahead of their time.

00:13:52:01 - 00:13:58:25
Speaker 2
If you listen to the album anarchy, it's from 1994 and it could have been released yesterday. So that's right. It sounds awesome.

00:13:59:02 - 00:14:01:29
Speaker 1
You were playing that a lot and it was apropos.

00:14:02:01 - 00:14:04:11
Speaker 2
Yeah, that's great.

00:14:04:13 - 00:14:05:28
Speaker 1
So that's like that's.

00:14:05:28 - 00:14:13:20
Speaker 2
Pretty much what's been inspiring me this week. Yeah. Music and anger I don't know about it.

00:14:13:23 - 00:14:30:19
Speaker 1
Yeah. It was a lot of emotions this week and I was inspired actually by grief. Yay. I was reading an incredible book. I mean, I've already read it, by Maggie O'Farrell called Hamnet, and most.

00:14:30:19 - 00:14:31:20
Speaker 2
So most.

00:14:31:20 - 00:14:41:19
Speaker 1
People know it now, and they're reading it now because the movie was made, which was a really excellent rendition of the book. But the book I highly recommend you highly write. We read it together.

00:14:41:19 - 00:14:42:10
Speaker 2
Yeah, for sure.

00:14:42:10 - 00:15:04:10
Speaker 1
It's awesome. It's so good. It is a story about, grief. But told in such a beautiful lyric way that it was inspiring to me. So I revisited that book and we went and did something we don't do very often, and we went and saw the film at the theater. Yeah. We like to watch movies at home.

00:15:04:10 - 00:15:04:27
Speaker 1
Yes.

00:15:04:29 - 00:15:22:02
Speaker 2
Sorry. I'm a little too neurotic in the theater. Like I get annoyed by sounds and people and coughing. And so I'm not really fun to go to a cinema with. So don't, don't make plans that involve watching a movie with me. Unless it's at home.

00:15:22:04 - 00:15:27:02
Speaker 1
You're fine. You did notice she was like, that person kept coughing and I'm like, I didn't even notice.

00:15:27:02 - 00:15:31:05
Speaker 2
I'm like, we're all going to catch what she's got.

00:15:31:08 - 00:15:58:04
Speaker 1
Yeah. Yeah, that's always a risk being out in public. But, the film was beautiful. And one of the things, spoiler alert, it has to do with Shakespeare and his incredible wife and his family and the loss of one of their children. That's based on a true story. But the thing I just kept coming back to when I read this book, when we watched the film, was that even even though.

00:15:58:04 - 00:16:30:03
Speaker 1
Right, despite lots of tragedy, lots of loss, both William Shakespeare and Agnes, the wife kept creating, kept going forward. Finding beauty, finding ways to respond, whatever that is for you. Like we would love to know about it, how you're dealing with your emotions, with what's happening in the world. But it made me so glad to see almost like permission to keep creating art.

00:16:30:05 - 00:16:37:05
Speaker 1
Despite what's happening in the real world, so to speak. So it really did inspire me.

00:16:37:07 - 00:16:51:25
Speaker 2
Yeah. That's great creation. Yeah. Due to grief. It's it's palpable and real and it's awesome. It's an awesome way to be able to process things and emotions. So yeah.

00:16:51:27 - 00:17:14:06
Speaker 1
So that's who we are. This week. We are committed to being here or showing up or doing stuff that is creative. We're going to share that with you. Yeah, we're going to remember what inspired us. Jot it down, what music we're listen to, what we're reading and share with you. And we would love it if you continue to tell us, what are you doing that's inspiring.

00:17:14:13 - 00:17:20:02
Speaker 1
What are you doing that's creative? What are you doing that's helping you cope? Can I say.

00:17:20:02 - 00:17:32:07
Speaker 2
One more thing about Hamnet? The movie? Oh, okay. Give Jessie Buckley all the awards like every award ever made, because. Holy crap. She was phenomenal.

00:17:32:10 - 00:17:45:15
Speaker 1
She is awesome. And I haven't seen her in a lot. And I just saw a trailer of a new movie coming out. I want to say it's this year. The bride, the bride of Frankenstein.

00:17:45:16 - 00:17:55:11
Speaker 2
Maggie Gyllenhaal directed that. Oh, I Can't See Her is also in it, a cameo by fever Ray. If anyone listens to fever Ray. Oh, they are. They're one of my favorites.

00:17:55:15 - 00:18:01:19
Speaker 1
Yeah, we've seen them in concert. And excellent music. Oh my God, yeah, they're in it. Or their music's in it or.

00:18:01:23 - 00:18:04:06
Speaker 2
They are in it. There's a cameo of them in it.

00:18:04:06 - 00:18:21:02
Speaker 1
Yeah, well, I have embraced the spooky, the monster side of things after meeting Candace. We've been married for ten years, and I remember when we first met and I was at your apartment.

00:18:21:04 - 00:18:22:24
Speaker 2
I know where this is going.

00:18:22:26 - 00:18:24:26
Speaker 1
You do wear.

00:18:24:28 - 00:18:27:21
Speaker 2
Halloween? Yes. Yeah, the Halloween decor.

00:18:27:21 - 00:18:31:14
Speaker 1
I was like, oh, you you left some Halloween decor out. Do you want to.

00:18:31:15 - 00:18:33:24
Speaker 2
This is like me so.

00:18:33:26 - 00:18:45:01
Speaker 1
And Candace is like Halloween decor. That's year round decor. And it was it was great. I've embraced it. Yep. One of your first stained glass projects was Frankenstein.

00:18:45:01 - 00:18:50:12
Speaker 2
Yeah, I made a Frankenstein's monster. I named him Francis. We'll.

00:18:50:13 - 00:18:51:00
Speaker 1
Have to.

00:18:51:02 - 00:18:52:17
Speaker 2
Post a picture of him. Yeah.

00:18:52:17 - 00:18:53:27
Speaker 1
He was your first big.

00:18:53:29 - 00:19:05:02
Speaker 2
My first big project. Actually, the first he was the first project I did outside of a stained glass class, so. Oh, yeah. It's my first project.
